Hotel Murano: The Collection is unique in the world in that it concentrates on art made of glass in the 21st-century placed in a hotel setting for the enjoyment of guests and visitors. A blend of specially commissioned works and others acquired from artists studios and galleries, the 45 artists from 12 countries on five continents (Asia, Australia, Europe, Latin and North America) are represented throughout public and private spaces in the building. Displayed within the hotels indoor public areas and, in one case, outdoors, the vessels, sculptures, prints and drawings are joined by designed functional handmade objects and installations that assemble into a sparkling environment. Collectively, they provide an aesthetic envelope for the interested hotel guest and docent-guided visitors to learn about and enjoy the beauty of glass.
Curator Tessa Papas traveled the globe to find and put into motion the creations of glass that enhance the hotels newly refurbished and redesigned interior areas. The Collection fits into seven broad categories: major commissions; commissions for the hotel tower elevator lobbies; commissions that are a part of the hotels design environment; objects and vessels that carry a symbolic or ceremonial character; abstract art; sculptures with animal imagery and those that use the human figure to tell a story.
